Halloween Spirit

Reagan appeared out of thin air, having Ported across town from her Coven House to an alleyway beside a popular junction in Salem.

She turned on the spot, looking around her to make sure no one had witnessed her sudden appearance, but no one was about.

The alleyway was at the back of a shop that faced onto the main pedestrianised street. It was dark, wet, and stank from the piles of refuse bags that were piled up inside and beside the large wheeled bins nearby. Reagan picked her way through the alleyway to the end, stopping at the edge of the sidewalk as people passed her by. Half of them were dressed up in costume carrying buckets of sweets as they went door to door. Adults and kids alike were talking and laughing and enjoying the evening, much to Reagan’s disgust.

These pitiful Rivens had no idea about the truth of the world and what truly lurked in the shadows. They played dress-up, pretending they were vampires or monsters, unaware that the real thing lived side-by-side with them, night after night.

Things had changed recently too, with the Aetheric Realm now unlocked and open once more. It had been closed off to the Magi for centuries, millennia even. A hidden, inaccessible world of spirit and magic that had once been the playground of the Magi, according to legend.

But that had all changed a little over a year ago.

The rumours about what had happened were seemingly endless and there really wasn't any telling what had truly happened or who had done it. One of the most popular rumours was that it had been Yasmin, the legendary Nomad, who had somehow found a way into the Spirit World and released the Archons, breaking the Magic that kept the Aetheric locked and barred to the Magi.

Reagan didn’t know how much of that was true, but she felt sure that if anyone could make that happen, Yasmin was the one to do it.

Whatever the case, the fact of the matter was, the Aetheric Realm was open once more, and the Magi were beginning to explore that alien realm and the spirits that resided there.

But this was a two-way street, and there were a growing number of stories of Aetheric creatures visiting the Material Realm and causing problems, or even leaving outright chaos in their wake.

It was for this reason that Reagan felt confident that tonight’s ritual world work. It had never worked before, of course, but that was before The Restoration of the Aetheric.

Looking up, Reagan admired the large black house across the street. It was on the corner of the crossroads, and was known as The Black House, or The Witch House, and was perhaps the only building left in Salem that had a direct link back to the witch hysteria that had consumed this town centuries ago. At least, it was the only one known to the Riven populace. The Magi of the town might know otherwise.

Reagan marched across the street, dodging a couple of cars as she went.
